Lewis Seelenmeyer leads our dispute resolution practice.

Lewis is an experienced litigator, recognised for his achievements in a number of high profile and complex commercial disputes.

Lewis is a "go to" litigator that works closely with his clients to provide comprehensive and strategic advice and resolve complex legal disputes.

Prior to joining Independent Legal, Lewis was a senior member of a global law firm's Finance practice, specialising in leading and resolving sensitive and significant litigious matters. During this time Lewis was one of the key lawyers in the restructure of Atlas Iron, being recognised regionally as one of the winners of the 2016 Australasian Law Awards, Insolvency & Restructuring Deal of the Year. Lewis was also the main Australian counsel acting for five key groups of aircraft lessors representing around a third of the Virgin Australia airlines fleet in connection with the Bain Capital acquisition of Virgin Australia, winning the 2021 Australasian Law Awards, Insolvency & Restructuring Deal of the Year.

In addition to his extensive private practice experience, Lewis has held roles in the national Dispute Resolution Group of Westpac Banking Corporation and as a Senior Legal Counsel in the Dispute Resolution Group of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, managing a broad range of disputes and claims arising across the national and international businesses of two of Australia's largest banks.

Lewis' practice is unique and diverse, having acted and represented large financial institutions, private and non-bank lenders, individuals, borrowers, guarantors, public and private companies, fund managers, AFSL holders, stock brokers, trustees, company directors and sporting professionals, as well as liquidators, receivers and administrators in all aspects of external administrations and associated litigation. He has vast experience within Australia, as well as success in managing disputes involving parties in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Italy and the United States.

Since 2015, Lewis' special interest has been acting in matters relating to the failure of some of Australia's largest stockbrokers and derivatives issuers, significant claims involving the misuse of client trust monies by AFSL holders, Ponzi schemes and related misconduct by company officers. This includes acting for clients in the matters of BBY Ltd, Halifax Investment Services, Direct FX, Courtney House and the iProsperity Group.

Lewis is:

  • a member of the Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association

  • a member of the Law Society of New South Wales

  • active in relation to the International Association of Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Professionals and the Turnaround Management Association

  • passionate about providing pro-bono advice and community assistance, acting in select pro-bono matters and providing services as a volunteer through the Justice Connect
